Stylish Mid Century Teak 4 Drawer Bureau By John Morton C1960s

A stylish, extremely well made and rare bureau in teak, designed by John Morton and was made by LM furniture of Wallingford in the 1960’s. Small makers label to the inside of the top right hand side drawer.

After creating a dual reputation in traditional craftsmanship and high-end industrial design with Tom Lupton hence LM Furniture. It was on a visit to Denmark and Sweden in 1947 that he was struck by the sophistication and universality of modern design. LM Furniture, mostly supplied furniture to offices and corporations, but also made pieces by other designers, including Gordon Russell and RD Russell, and Ronald Carter, to order, and took on bespoke commissions.  producing a limited number of designs, the Bureau being one such piece and the probably more famous Campus Chairs being another.

The bureau is a fine example of great design and good craftsmanship and very much echoes the era well with effortless poise, clever use of good timber, in this case teak, and addition of quality hardware - the brass spun knobs are without doubt rather wonderful. The piece has been carefully cleaned and repolished in our workshop and is ready to place. Expect the odd blemish and a few marks inside but nothing nasty with a working lock and key present if you wish to keep a secret or two…
