Set of 4 19th Century Black Painted Lambert Hitchcock Side Dining Chairs

Sale price £685.00

We have a nicely aged set of four 19th century painted side chairs by Lambert Hitchcock, marked to the back seat rail 'HITCHCOCKS HITCHCOCKSVILLE CONN. WARRANTED' perfect to scatter around the home or would make perfect dining kitchen chairs being comfortable to sit on.

“The concept for mass producing quality wood furniture was spawned in 1818 by a man named Lambert Hitchcock. Hitchcock was a master woodworker who got the idea for mass production from clock makers of the time that produced the interchangeable parts for clocks. His operation started in a small town in Connecticut, where Hitchcock began making chair parts from maple, birch and oak. Instead of carving or inlaying the designs, Hitchcock used a stencilling technique to embellish the dark finishes on the chair parts”

Condition - is good with genuine wear and rubbing to the well shaped frames and legs in the right places. The seats are good and firm and likely a professionally completed replacement, be it a while ago. As mentioned these sit well with wear to the original stencilled designs, gilt work and black frames but nothing fresh or not historic - a lovely set of worn chairs which are good to go with no wobbles or sways.

A lovely looking set ready to place and enjoy, late 19th Century.
