A Grand Sized Victorian Chest of Drawers by James Shoolbred and Co
Presented in great original unrestored condition and of a grand size this Victorian chest of drawers is well crafted possessing just a hint of Aesthetic Movement with those rather nice brass handles and marked Jas Shoolbred & Co C1880.
James Shoolbred or Jas to his friends and work colleges was based in Tottenham Court Road, London and designed and made high quality furniture mostly for the home. The furniture was displayed in a series of catalogues that the company produced every year with their new and impressive designs. His furniture was always displayed and photographed alongside the textiles, carpets and other accessories that the company sold, creating an example interior design for customers to view. He was granted a Royal Warrant by the mid-1880s.
It’s a handsome beast and benefits from having a superior finish than most. As mentioned it benefits from not having been messed with or re-polished and possesses a pleasing aged look. All drawers are working well with the original brass handles are in situ and no repairs to the carcass just day to day knocks and bumps. No bad odours.
Never easy to find a large chest in honest original condition and from a decent maker to boot…
