“Dawkins” was found alongside a very similar water colour, both surviving from the Victorian period and both framed by Alfred Davies of 17 Kings Road, Sloane Square S.W - so we would assume that “Dawkins” was a London chap or at least a worthy traveller...
The water colour with drawing overlay is very well accomplished with some sharp detail and silhouette showing “Dawkins” in traditional dress - “collars up”. He has a fine crop of hair and well-trimmed side burns, yes a groomed gentleman. The face is particularly good with a staring pair of eyes and wonderfully drawn and coloured lips.
The other shows a related gentleman (questionable) which is of a similar size and the same framer. This second portrait is rather faded, however they look splendid as a pair and we thought it would be a good idea for them not to part company at this stage in their lives!
We would say that both portraits are from the same hand however we have no signatures, but as mentioned before, very accomplished and would be a good addition to any wall. The attire and look suggests circa 1850 rather than late Victorian.
They have a real sense of style and formality, a fetching pair of chaps.
Dimensions – Overall: Height 32cm x Width 27cm
