Very attractive British Swivel Birchcraft Office Desk Chair
We would say late 1920s with the swivel “floating” on the less frequently seen ball bearing mechanism - it makes a rather soothing rippling noise when you swivel… This chair was designed by William Birch of High Wycombe for his Birchcraft range. He pioneered the development of Arts & Crafts furniture believing that beautiful chairs and furniture should not be for the wealthy alone.
This chair has an appealing form with its attractive legs perched on its little castors with the arms and back relatively low slung compared to some, however comfortable and very supportive.
The frame is in sound order having enjoyed a re-wax, the seat was lifted and new webbing introduced so it is firm with no sagging, with the original green Rexine being replaced afterwards. The swivel is spinning fine and the seat is at a fixed height which works for most folk and most desks.
A rather splendid desk chair ready to place.
