Fascinating Victorian 4 Fold Screen By Hindley and Son Oxford St London - Atheistic Movement Tone

Always exciting to discover a quality item - respectable maker, fine craftsmanship and very interesting subject matter - we truly believe this screen by Hindley and Sons of Oxford St London from the Victorian period hits the spot on all three points.
The well-crafted mahogany frame is of an even tone with high quality brass fittings and the four panels pivot superbly well on their gun barrel hinges. The weighty frame is showing general usage marks however no splits or cracks and retains the makers mark to give it credence.
To add to the appeal of this rather good looking screen are the interesting panels which as you can see from the photographs have some damage however nothing that’s going to distract from what’s going on an aesthetic level.
The goat skin parchment is wonderfully embossed on one side with flowers, foliage and a mix of large and small twisting leaves with a boxed weave background and the other side is again heavily embossed with some enchanting pairs of semi-nude mermaid like figures (possibly Adam and Eve – both with an apple in their hands?), pairs of dreamlike like deer swirling together, pairs of mystical fish and pairs of flying bird like creatures and four legged griffin type animals (are these elements of Noah’s animals?) . It’s a super looking piece and leans strongly towards the Atheistic Movement, we’ve never seen anything like it before, truly delightful and thrilling to look over.
So it has some damage to the panels exposing the interlining and some loose and missing parchment however it’s very exciting, a very good maker and it’s useful. Personally we like the condition - it’s been used, admired, lived in and enjoyed.
Not to be clustered together with the likes of the often flimsy scrapbook type Victorian screens from a similar period, this screen possesses impact, curiosity and class and would look fabulous in almost any style of home.
