Striking Early 20th Century British Painted Workshop Chest Cabinet
A belting find this deep 5 drawer chest from a Staffordshire workshop! It’s presented in that slightly knackered, original used condition with bags of wear marks from a life in a workshop setting. This one possesses masses of character and grit.
It’s of a good size – five deep drawers making it fairly tall and deeper than most. This one has enjoyed a deep cream paint job, be it a long while ago and now the oak is peeking through from years of being worked on. The drawers are sitting on a deep plinth which is again nicely worn from plenty of boot kicking. As mentioned, it’s had a tough life so expect plenty of wear marks, tarnishing and the odd historic repair. The great looking unpolished brass handles are in place minus one which has been given a historic replacement some time ago by the looks of the screws. We have had to fit a new back and also replace one of the drawer base linings. All of the drawers are aged inside with marks, running fine and one has sections inside for nuts, bolts and small hand tools – or whatever you now decide to put in it. The frame is firm with no wobbles and we reckon it’s good for any few years yet.
We have carefully cleaned the inside and out and applied a coating of Renaissance Wax to hold its condition in place.
So pleasing to fine a genuine piece of workshop “furniture” which has survived the test of time.
