19th Century British School Portrait of a Seated Cleric Oil on Panel
A small unframed oil on panel study of a seated cleric. The study is not signed, with no indication as to who the cleric is, however due to his prominent widow’s peak he could be mistaken for being one of Jane Austen’s brothers either the Reverend James Austen or Henry Austen. Whoever he is, it is a lovely little study that could easily be placed within a group of other paintings.
Very much in the style of painting of the day, edging towards the Romantic Era with an obscure landscape in the background. The cleric is wearing a preaching robe over his cassock with a white clerical cravat or preaching tabs – all very typical dress of an Anglican minister. The painting is showing age well, with fine craquelure.
Dimensions – Overall: Height 26.5cm x Width 20 x Deep 1cm
