A good quality Victorian glazed bookcase presented in a lighter, almost bleached limed oak, rather than the sometimes sombre darker tone and let’s face it all the better for it. This one is of a workable size and is not too ornamental in design which works well in its favour.
The piece which separates into two for easy transportation, is well made with pleasing curved tops to the glazed doors and feathered oak to the lower door panel. In fact, overall, the oak is of an attractive grain. The curves are mimicked in the deep moulded cornice and the top of the lower half. This one works well – the size is right, it’s a good colour, it’s the right material, it’s not too precious and it’s good looking – some from this era can be damn ugly and a bit clumpy to be honest…
Condition wise it’s not bad - the original glass is crack free, the three oak fronted shelves are intact (one is a little bowed) and can be set at different heights, always useful. There is a small historic split to the lower half on one of its sides but it’s not a big deal and is nothing to be concerned about. The large lower cupboard has a shelf about halfway up and altogether making it a good piece with just enough style. The doors are close well, but no key and there are historic marks to the oak but again they are firm with no structural repairs.
Dimensions – Overall: Height 220cm x Width 107.5cm x Depth 48cm
