Large Oak Framed Victorian Hearts of Oak Society Certificate 1904
An interesting slice of history...This Hearts of Oak Society Certificate dated 1904, for a Mr John Roberts, is hosted in a large oak frame with a gilt slip - not sure if it was ever glazed and is presented in historic condition.
It was on 20th June 1842 that twelve members of a Provident Society met at the Bird-in-Hand Tavern, 17 Long Acre, with the intention of establishing their own Society. This society was to be named the Hearts of Oak Benefit Society, after the navy whose wooden ships protected Britain from invasion. The intention of the Society was to protect its members against distress through sickness. A Committee of Management was established under the founder and Secretary Mr John Hadley. The landlord of the Bird-in-Hand Mr Richard Mills was elected first Treasurer of the Society.
As mentioned, our certificate - not a copy and definitely not one that you'd slip into a drawer, is a grand size, a little warped but perfectly sound and a modestly priced piece of history.
The item will be delivered by private courier to ensure it arrives in one piece.
Dimensions – Overall: Width 85cm x Height 110cm
