A most interesting and decorative metal trunk / deed box dated 1921 with the top inscribed with gold lettering – Railways Act 1921 Western Group Absorption of Subsidiary Companies with a long list of Railway companies including Exeter and Princetown to name two covering the surface.
“The Railways Act 1921 also known as the Grouping Act, was an Act of Parliament enacted by the British government of David Lloyd George intended to stem the losses being made by many of the country's 120 railway companies, move the railways away from internal competition, and to retain some of the benefits which the country had derived from a Government-controlled railway during and after the Great War of 1914-1918. The provisions of the Act took effect from the start of 1923. This act created the 'big four' railway companies - Southern Railway (SR), Great Western Railway (GWR), London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS), and the London North Eastern Railway (LNER)”
The trunk survives in fair historic order with slight paint loss to the top but with all of the railway companies’ names still intact. The original gold lettering is pleasingly faded and the pale blue interior still pretty fresh.
A curious, uncommon and useable piece of history…
Dimensions – Overall: Height 36.5cm x Width 67cm x Depth 45.5cm
