What a wonderful overmantle mirror surviving from the Victorian period and presented in untouched, unrestored condition. We love this overmantle – it’s a great size – 158cm high x 136cm wide - taller than it is wide, always does it for us! It’s survived unlike some, unaltered with the thick frame - a gorgeous mix of ebonised and painted muffled mustard ribbons or foliage and deep muted purple colours with parts displaying aged texture and craquelure having sat over an open fire for most of its life. The mirror glass is original with no cracks and again aging nicely with foxing and a wonderful crystal sparkle to the bottom close to the frame. The back of the overmantle is again untouched, original and sound. Worth remembering it’s quite a heavy piece.
So pleasing to find one that is particularly original and of such a good size. No amount of images will really do justice to this one – best admired and appreciated in the flesh bossing a roaring fire…
