This oil painting is enhanced by viewing it from afar rather than close up – well that’s just our thought.
Gerald Reitlinger was a British art historian especially interested in Asian ceramics and was an avid collector. Not only was he a great fan of the artist Austin Osman Spare, but he too painted - maybe he was Reitlinger’s inspiration for this painting?
The oil depicts an interesting and abstract view of religion. There seems to be a rather stately figure leaning over a grand bed wearing a bishop’s mitre, most probably giving the figure laying in the bed their last rights. The room is filled with a mix of flying angel type and semi-nude figures and backed by a cross showing a crucifix. Is one of the figures aiming a cross at the bishop, as if to question him?
A very thought provoking and addictive painting which, the more you view it the more accomplished and interesting it becomes. I must admit it’s grown on me, the colours are good and the subject is as yet an unsolved mystery.
The condition of the signed painting is fair, the colours are vivid with the canvas a little tired and worn at the edges but perfectly good to hang.
Dimensions: Height 50.5cm x Width 41cm
We include the cost of delivery in the purchase price within mainland UK. For smaller items we tend to use Royal Mail etc. Rest assured pieces are carefully wrapped, packed and correctly insured.
