A large pair of trout carriers from Calwich Abbey in Derbyshire which were used to transport trout from the estate’s 16 fish ponds to where they were sold. The abbey then turned home, was purchased in 1926 by Harry Wathall and Will.G Wathall, both keen fisherman who bred trout in the ponds for a number of years. Sadly the house fell into disrepair like many of its type, however the Fishing Temple next to the river remained…
The carriers are substantial in size, have a wonderful form and we think are a delightful looking pair of chaps. They are made of galvanised metal with lead used to seal the joints and both possess the emblem “RETURN EMPTY TO W.G.H WATHALL 99 MACKLIN STREET DERBY” still the home of Wathall Funeral Directors.
Condition wise – what you see is what you get with these – great patination to the metal as formed with surface crusting to parts, two large carry handles. The tops/lids do prize off and the insides are clean and don’t smell fishy!
A cracking pair from a long forgotten English Country House.
Dimensions – Overall: Height 61cm x Diameter 57.5cm
