A rare piece indeed – a splendid scumble glazed Victorian cellarette surviving in wonderful historic condition manufactured by George Kent of High Holborn London.
George Kent of 1999-201 High Holborn was a company that produced a variety of pieces and enjoyed inventing “Applications of Science to the Comforts of Life” according to one of his adverts and in 1871 employed 72 men and 12 boys, eventually merging with another company in 1921.
As mentioned the cellarette survives in the condition which we love - lived in and showing its history well. The makers brass pressed plaque is proudly displayed when the lid is opened and apart from missing its interior stopper at the base, an easy fix with a cork, it’s very much as it should be.
The scumble glazed effect is pleasingly marked and the delightfully stout set of turned legs are all finished with the original iron castors. The lid opens with a brass press button to the front and the metal interior is all intact, no splits and includes three wire mesh shelves, the burgundy interior lid edging remains, be it a little time worn. To the side are a pair of classic Victorian metal handles for ease if you wish to carry it.
Not seen one looking so good before and for it to have survived in original condition makes it a little more desirable than most. Of course you can load it with bottles or use it as a side table – ether way a great talking piece.
Dimensions – Overall: Height 65cm x Width 51.5cm x Depth 48cm
