This Dryad Cane armchair is catalogued as a Dryad NO 4022 Armchair with a grand price of £2.7/6 when designed. Bearing its plaque to its lower rear – DRYAD (Reg’d) CANE FURNITURE LEICESTER ENGLAND 36.
Dryad was set up in February 1907, with Harry Peach as the proprietor and Fletcher as the chief designer. By the end of the year 30 designs were in production made by four men in a workshop at the back of Peach’s Belvoir Street premises. The firm employed over 50 workers and enjoyed great success supplying numerous companies including Cunard.
Back to this chair – it’s got a wonderful flowing form with dense arms easy to rest your hands on, a tall back, wide seat and a high standard of cane work which is to be expected. Condition wise it’s certainly useable and stable, there are areas of loose wear and broken cane which is to be expected considering its age. The colour is maturing nicely with a pleasing patina and of course it’s comfortable to sit in. We would say 1930s in style.
We have left this one well alone – silly to over clean – just a gentle wipe over. A super looking, well designed, cane chair from a good maker crying out for a good cup of coffee!
