The Victorians just loved to rejoice the famous and illustrious figures of the era – here we have Field Marshal Lord Roberts, or BOBS to his best mates, celebrated in the form of a stick stand.
The cast iron stand is marked BICLAM no 414 RD to the rear which would suggest it was made at the Bennetts Foundry in the late Victorian period C1900. The stand depicts Lord Roberts, a highly decorated Field Marshal in uniform with the lettering BOBS, his nickname underneath his feet.
“Lord Roberts won the Victoria Cross at Khudagani during the Indian Mutiny (1857-59) for repeated acts of gallantry. He also led his troops on the legendary march from Kabul to Kandahar. Despite the difficult terrain and the high temperatures he covered 280 miles (400km) in 20 days and hardly lost a man.
On returning to Britain he was made a Knight of the Garter and created Earl Roberts. Roberts died of pneumonia at St Omer, France, during a visit to Indian troops in 1914. After lying in state in Westminster Hall, one of only two non-Royals to do so in the 20th century, the other being Winston Churchill, he was given a state funeral.”
The stand is in good condition with two historic repairs to the top piece which have been well executed and are holding up fine.
Overall a truly delightful piece, full of character and charm. We are sure it will be a joy to own for the successful purchaser.
Dimensions – Overall: Height 74.5cm x Width 40cm x Depth 20.5cm
