This Victorian oil on canvas depicting a Quaker woman in – Plain Dressing – “The Testimony of Simplicity” states – “Personal pride does not end with noble blood. It leads people to a fond value of their persons, especially if they have any pretence to shape or beauty. Some are so taken with themselves it would seem that nothing else deserved their attention. Their folly would diminish if they could spare but half the time to think of God, that they spend in washing, perfuming, painting and dressing their bodies.”
The oil portrait certainly possesses a slight eerie mood about it, the sitter suitably attired in simple clothes has adopted a rather serious manner than most may have in this period whilst being painted. The portrait is well painted, in good historic order and presented in original condition – a little time worn around its edges with one repair.
We would assume English in origin as at the time there was a growing Quaker following in the UK and a clear presence in the Midlands, where we came across this painting. The painting certainly bears a strong resemblance to the portrait that Joseph Edward Southall did of his mother who was a Quaker… A pleasing find and a nice one to add to a collection.
