It was the quality of this glazed bookcase/cabinet that caught our eye. It possesses a pleasing warm colour, grain, patina and came to us in that desirable un-messed with condition which is not that easy to find.
This cabinet has some nice touches - figured moulding to the edges of the glass which is matched on the lower cabinet doors, light carving to the edges of the long single drawer and its original locks with key. The glazed sectioned is fitted with four adjustable shelves and the lower cabinet a single fixed shelf for further storage. All sitting on a deep plinth with the back as it should be.
This one was owned by a professor has been well fashioned, slightly reserved – it’s certainly peeping its head above its later Victorian counterparts on style and quality - those later glazed bookcases can be a little unrefined in looks and finish. Add to this that desirable “lived in” look and its sure to be put to good use and admired.
Condition wise the colour and condition of the mahogany is good with only a little veneer loss at the rear edge and base side of top cabinet. There are the usual historic marks from everyday use, nothing wrong with that and is presented with no stripping or re-polishing. There is a very slight bow to the glazed doors however nothing to worry about and a minor split in the interior base of the drawer again not a major concern. The key is working and turning in both locks. The cabinet splits into a bottom and top for removals, delivery and positioning.
If you are seeking a cabinet with true character and grace, then this must be worth a punt…
