Sometimes we are very fortunate to stumble across some pieces that just possess that look – majestic but with their feet firmly on “terra firma”. This painted dresser with its origins in the rural Welsh / English borders is surely worthy of finding a space for.
It’s never easy to find pieces that reflect their past life – this one with its wonderful patination sings its history to you loud and clear – the worn wear marks on it edges, the shedding of it black paint close to the worn brass handles (we would assume a historic replacement for knobs) pleasingly tarnished and the overall fading of the finish surely puts it high up on the wish list.
The dresser is a mix of pine and elm with a flight of three drawers flanked by two deep cupboard doors finished with black metal knobs and a drawer above. The carcass is firm – the back original and secure. There is a well-executed repair to the front lower right leg and she sits with no wobbles or sways, the drawers are a little worn however they open and close without any great effort. Overall it survives without any modifications and is aging rather well. We dusted away the cobwebs and have lightly waxed her.
Dressers like this are getting more difficult to source - a terrific opportunity to purchase a piece with cracking presence.
