Joseph Hinks was a British Inventor based in Great Hampton St, Birmingham established in 1865 who made lamps and as the business expanded they acquired showrooms in Birmingham and two in London, Charing Cross Road and New Bond Street. The company subsequently turned their attention to the design of electrical lighting.
We have one of his rather wonderful looking lamps which we found semi converted to electric while in Cambridgeshire. It certainly does not cry converted oil lamp like so many can and thus is highly desirable and of course usable!
The fat bulbous part of the brass lamp is impressed with flowers, leaves (this could be a later addition) and a Grecian swirl effect around its most bulbous part. The ball then sits on four well shaped slender claw feet which in turn perch on a stepped ebonised base on four pad feet.
We think the lamp is rather distinctive, a little eccentric and possesses a generous dose of style. It’s looking great after a full conversion and PAT test having fitted it with a new “Vintage Bulb” and rather fetching plum coloured twisted cord.
A very unusual lamp, that’s a sensible height, is the ideal size to sit on a console or side table, has real class and brings a smile to ones face which we feel benefits from its update to electric power!
Final thought – has the look of a Faberge Egg…
