Find the right spot – maybe over a large mantel piece or good sized hallway and you will find a great space for a grand oil portrait of “Mr Ginger Beard”. Not his real name however we have decided it’s appropriate for such a well painted and distinguished fellow and that beard is almost real you just want to grab it and give it a stroke!
We purchased the portrait a fair time ago in the Cotswolds and have grown to greatly admire him. The picture is not in perfect condition however just take a look at the quality of the workmanship – his hand, fob chain and of course his face. The picture shows a fine middle aged gentleman with an impressive bushy growth of ginger hair seated on a captain’s chair with its red silk cushion. His attire is very much of the period and his class distinction – his formal trousers show a black satin facing on the out-seam and his deep ruby waistcoat is finished with a fob chain. We believe that he has a connection with the admiralty and could well be Russian but that’s only our guess… The colours - deep reds, blacks and shades of grey certainly suit the mood and the artist must have been well accomplished to achieve such wonderful detail, sadly there is no signature.
As mentioned earlier the painting is not perfect, showing overall craquelure and a few canvas repairs and some restoration, similarly the frame from the equivalent era to the canvas is showing signs of age and distress but is however stable.
The overall finish and effect is rather magnificent. Both canvas and frame are ready to hang and we really hope you enjoy “Mr Ginger Beard” as much as we do.
Dimensions - Overall including frame: Height 115.5cm x Width 96.5cm
