Very original and fitting the frame well, this 19th century portrait is showing its history well and we rather like the gentleman’s slight smug look and what about these coat collars!
Dressed in clothes of the period, the painting possesses that ability to make you think the eyes are looking at you wherever you are in the room. As mentioned the condition is very original with pleasant aging to the canvas and frame. We have an earlier portrait of a young man which came from the same source both “attic finds” so they are dry and smell okay.
So good to grab a portrait which has not been overly restored or messed with, you could clean the canvas if you wish, however we feel he looks self-righteous enough as he is!
