From a local university, this 1970s drawing desk / table gives you two options - one side a moveable drawing table and after a quick switch over a flat surface.
The desk was made by British Thornton a company who set up business in 1878 making and supplying quality drawing and surveying instruments and materials to engineers, architects, ship builders, surveyors, local authorities and schools. More information on A G Thornton's products can be seen in the The Museum of Science and Industry, Manchester.
The table echoes the 70’s with its green Formica top, straight uniform lines and a practical nonsense form. As mentioned the table offers two options – “the full works”- a sloped drawing surface with 3 adjustable angles, a movable ruler which works by means of a weighted roller, with the added benefit of a small flat surface to the right or “the basic” a flat green Formica surface. The table flips – well hardly flips – but rotates depending on your needs. Please note the mechanism does work however it takes a few goes to get the hang of it! Be careful of these fingers.
The desk is all there – however it may have had a drawer, the Formica does have some scratches and the legs are a little marked, but overall we think it’s looking good, the right height and a sensible size.
It’s so good to get a piece from the 70s which not only serves a purpose but also possesses some style. Maybe it’s time to give the 1930s oak desk the push and grab a bit of seventies style instead?
Dimensions – Overall: Height 71cm x Width 113cm x Depth 56cm
Dimensions – Specifically the Drawing Board: Height 47cm x Width 65cm
