Shapland and Petter Occasional Side Table C1920
A delightful English 1920s occasional table of pleasing quality and grace being model 2378 from Shapland and Petter of Barnstaple.
Founded by cabinet maker Henry Shapland, who was inspired by a wave-moulding machine during a voyage to America in 1848, the company began in a single room at the Raleigh woollen mill in Pilton. Henry Petter, an accountant, later joined Shapland, and their partnership led to rapid success. The company moved to a larger site after purchasing the Raleigh Factory in 1864. Despite a devastating fire in 1888, they rebuilt a modern factory at their current location by the Long Bridge.
It sits rather well, perched on well-shaped slender curved legs, shell motifs and edged top.
Condition wise it is good – it sits firm, we have day to day marks to the top and a slight stable aged crack but nothing nasty or of concern. The tone of the mahogany is deep and it sits in its original finish. Ready to place.
A good looking little occasional table late 1920s from Shapland and Petter of Barnstable.
