We continue on our run of finding good oil paintings of gentleman with beards, no ladies as yet! And this one we think is great. Once again the quality of the brush strokes is very good obviously created by an accomplished artist.
It’s the texture and feel that makes this one attractive, along with its size – not too big but not too small, it could be hung over a chest of drawers effortlessly. It’s been painted with real talent and understanding. The subject is a beaded gent with his arms crossed, his face in particular is very addictive to look at – being very easy on the eye. The tone and overall colours are very attractive and the condition, apart from a very small hole is “as found”. You could give it a light clean, however it looks pretty good the way it is.
The portrait is signed “Herbert Gibbs” on the front of the canvas bottom right along with a date which is not easy to read. The painting could well be attributed to the British born Australian artist Herbert William Gibbs and could be a self-portrait. However a little more investigating is required... We would say that it was painted around the turn of the 19th/20th century, maybe a little later.
Overall a great addition to a wall or collection whether left in the frame or popped out of it!
Dimensions – Overall including Frame: Height 87.5cm x Width 76cm x Depth 7cm
Dimensions – Specifically the View Area: Height 68cm x Width 56cm
