We have a wonderfully large gilt frame of a superior quality by Cornelius Callaghan, carver and gilder of Clare Street, Dublin made in and around the 1830s. Cornelius Callaghan was a Dublin based gilder working from 24 Clare Street, between 1822–1844, and was renowned for his high quality work on picture frames, mirrors and the like, and this one is no exception.
The frame with its makers mark encases a piece of bronzed mirror glass which is a replacement however it works well and makes the piece perfect for an old or more modern home. We would assume that the frame originally framed a large oil painting which was lost along its journey of nearly 200 years…
The frame is large, dense and well balanced which you would expect from a superior maker. It does show marks which is to be expected bearing in mind the age, however the piece is firm, heavy and the colour fair – again about right for the age. There are only two largish pieces of decoration missing, around 8cms on the bottom of the frame.
I thinks it’s best to let the pictures do the peddling on this one!
Dimensions – Outer Area of Frame: Height 106.5cm x Width 94cm
Dimensions – Inner Area: Height 81cmx Width 68.5cm
Established in 2011 we take pleasure in working for private and commercial clients in the sourcing of single pieces though to full Interior Design.
