Late 1930s English Oak Deco Modernist Desk
Probably the best desk this year for us – found on the south coast and surviving in wonderful condition from the late 1930s. The modernist movement was intended to offer accessible and functional furniture that celebrated the beauty of new materials and simple forms. This one certainly leans towards Heal’s in style and quality with good similarities to Heal’s desks of the same era.
This double pedestal desk possesses quality and the design captures the late deco era with a hint of modernist - simple lines and wonderful craftsmanship make this one an utter delight. Also of sensible proportions for a period or modern space.
We have two flanks of 4 oak drawers either side of the knee hole. The drawers have the original walnut handles, lozenge in shape and a perfect fit and look. We have the original leather to the top, a little faded putty colour with the Greek key motif in view around the edge. A little wear but nothing out of place.
As mentioned the piece survives in very good original condition. We have a few ink marks to the insides of the drawers which are running well. The desk sits firm with good colour and with no repairs or wobbles – just sensible historic wear. The back is good and as such the desk could sit happily in a room not just against a wall. We have gently cleaned the desk – no major work required in our workshop.
A particularly nice 1930s English oak desk ready to enjoy.
