1930s British Vintage 3 Drawer Oak Desk by Wake & Dean Ltd
The backbone of many British Government offices, this 3 drawer oak desk survives from the 1930s – stamped 1938 along with the maker's mark Wake & Dean Ltd along with the G.R and crown stamp – is a decent example of its type. The setup is relatively straightforward, 3 good sized drawers with brass cupped handles, a bottle green top all sitting on 4 purposeful oak legs. This one would have possibly sat in a clerk’s office in a government building. We have an additional metal label to the front “Carl Zeiss”, a pioneer of Scientific Optics – a company with a history from 1846.
The condition is good, the oak has a pleasing grain and colour. We have waxed the drawer runners and also given the frame a light beeswax. The legs are firm and the desk frame is wobble free. The original bottle green top is in situ with no rips, nevertheless with marks and historic dings. The brass cupped handles are nicely age tarnished and are stamped GR with a crown. If you prefer the polished look, it would take about 5 minutes of elbow grease to make them shiny. Smells fine too, alas no key for the lock.
A good 1930s British desk ready for work…
