Pair of Ernest Race Sheppey Ash Armchairs c1960
Originally purchased directly alongside a matching 2 seater sofa from an architect, who in turn purchased them directly from Race Furniture. The Sheppey range was the winner of the Design Centre Award 1963. One sits at the V&A museum – not a bad pedigree!
The clean cut angled ash frame sits on stove enamelled steel frames with some lovely slender alloy inlaid detailing to both ends of the arms.
Workshop report – The ash frames have been carefully hand cleaned and polished to ensure the grain is highlighted but historic wear not lost. Expect sensible wear with a gentle shine. Both frames are strong with no repairs or breaks. New Pirelli webbing has replaced the old worn webbing with the seats and back are enjoying a full reupholstery in a gorgeous mid denim blue 100% wool fabric from Bute Fabrics, which pays homage to the original fabric which was very badly worn and not serviceable. We do have marks and wear to the steel frames but nothing nasty or missing. Faded Race labels sit on the frames underneath.
Price is for the pair delivered.
A super pair of 1960s armchairs from Ernest Race.
