A rather exciting find in one of the class rooms of a Victorian Sunday School in Cheshire - this bench oozes real charm and character. We are not great believers in over doing the refurbishment of pieces we find, hence this bench sits in its very original condition apart from a light clean and polish. The bench was purchased along with a small number of benches of differing lengths from the very same Sunday school and we would think that they have sat there most of their lives, in the same spot!
It is the simple construction and humble appearance that makes this bench so attractive. Many church finds can be clumsy looking, weighty in appearance and awkward for home use. We would assume that it was village or country made, as were many for local churches and Sunday schools in the Victorian era. The age of the building puts this bench around c.1860 – it is so pleasing to find an item at source giving it some history and authenticity.
As mentioned earlier, we have chosen to leave the bench is its original condition and therefore it does show usage marks and wear in places, however it is firm – no wobbles – no repairs and the paint finish is original rather than a fresher coat of more recent gloss. We are certain it would strip and polish up if you wish. We think this is a gem, nimble in appearance and of great appeal.
Dimensions – Overall: Height 78cm x Length 183cm x Depth 33cm
Dimensions – Specifically the Seat: Height 43cm x Depth 28cm
We include UK mainland delivery in the purchase price so you are able to relax rather than search for quotes or asking a friend of a friend to borrow a van! We use couriers who are user friendly, suitably insured and offer a full blanket service. Rest assured we will liaise with you once your purchase is complete.
