Vintage 1940s Oak Gomme Chest Drawers Stamped CC41
A rather fetching 5 drawer chest marked with the CC41 stamp on the rear with makers ticket intact and also marked with Gomme of High Wycombe stamp to the top drawer. In a fetching light tone of oak for a change.
Part of the Utility CC41 furniture scheme and a seldom seen piece. Introduced by the British government and headed by Sir Gordon Russell, the scheme was designed to cope with shortages of raw materials and rationing of consumption during World War II.
The aim was to ensure the production of strong, well-designed furniture making the most efficient use of limited timber. The designs were largely in the tradition of the Arts and Crafts movement, were simplistic with lack of ornamentation and entirely contrary to the popular taste of the immediate pre-war period.
This one survives in great order with all drawers running smoothly – the top one having 3 sections for socks and undies etc. It’s been well cared for with light day to day marks, original matching era shaped handles in situ with only a little nibble at the bottom right back corner about 1cm – not unsightly. We have ensured the drawers are clean and the chest is ready to place. We would assume this may have started life as a mirrored chest as we have a faint age line.
Not many of these around in this condition…
