An attractive and very appealing four leaf screen which survives from around the early 1900s and possesses the knack of dragging your eyes over the numerous scenes which are painted all over the front whenever you walk by it.
The screen is showing its age well with a fascinating craquelure covering the majority of it with intricately painted figures amidst ornamental gardens depicting stories in sequence from Chinese folklore. The scenes are just delightful – several Junks bobbing on lakes, large well painted willow trees, groups of well-dressed gentlefolks, bridges and birds all outlined with a border of simple flower and swirl design.
The condition is great for its age with no rips, wear or loss to the screen. It’s showing its age a little on the edges which would have had the impact of being moved however the painted panels are gently faded and lightly glazed - just superb and still well secured to the frame.
We think it’s rather wonderful and its appeal is very addictive.
