Lovely Victorian Cast Iron & Brass Music Stand Leveson & Sons London C1900
A true attic find, surviving in delightful order with a wonderful unspoilt look. Leveson & Sons were based in New Oxford St and Park Side, Knightsbridge and were established in 1849.
It’s a delightful piece – we were fortunate to have been offered the stand which had been sitting in the attic of a Worcestershire home for a number of years hence the remarkable original condition.
With it not our style to get out the polisher and grind away making older pieces “shiny”, it means here we have a delightful mix of an unpolished brass fitting and aged cast iron with some of the black paint clinging on where it can.
The stand sits on four decorative splayed legs with lion paw feet which support a horizontal “candle or mug of tea” shelf, the height being adjustable. The top sheet rest has a ball plate which offers adjustment and a spring loaded brass shaft which again adjusts and swivels. We would assume that the “candle shelf” is a historic replacement but blends in well, otherwise original and rather glorious.
Heavy for its size and beautifully aged.
