Little Early 20th Century Book Trough Spencer and Co Madras
Utterly delightful, early 20th Century book trough from Spencer and Co Madras. It’s numbered/stamped under one of the feet and is one of two we have identical in design, size and form – the other is missing its little Spencer and Co Madras label.
A little history - Described as the most magnificent department store in the East Spencer and Co was designed by W.N. Pogson and inaugurated in 1895. It was commissioned by Eugene Oakshot, who joined John William Spencer as a partner in J.W. Spencer & Co. in 1871 and took over the firm in 1882.
It survives in untouched and unspoilt condition with gentle day to day wear and more than a whiff of Arts and crafts about it. The little heart shape cut outs on the sides and the stepped bases are just a pleasure.
As mentioned this one is mahogany – we have an identical one in rosewood if of interest.
Never easy to find from Spencer’s of Madras and in such fine order.
Dimensions - Overall: Height 18cm x Width 41.5cm and Book Area 25.5cm x Depth 23cm
