Life Size Sculpture By Mary Milner Dickens - “Shepherdess”
A wonderful life size sculpture.
Mary Milner Dickens (1932-2019) - a little info on this talented artist - As a sculptor her versatility is founded upon the broad education she received at a number of eminent institutions during the 1950s and 1960s. She acquired the traditional skills of modelling, carving, drawing and lettering at the Royal College of Art and Leicester College of Art, while her time studying for a Masters degree in Fine Art at Cornell University in the United States exposed her to a variety of new technological processes and alternative media. She also spent two years at the British School in Rome and won the prestigious Prix de Rome for Sculpture in 1957.
This one, the Shepherdess was one of her full size pieces. It commands real presence and is full of texture and contours. It sits in an aged condition – we do have losses to a few of the fingers and on occasions around the edges but, we feel, that seems to add to its appeal. The sculpture is made of cast plaster which has an original bronze effect finish which is faded in places. We find it a little haunting and it certainly created a centre point for our showroom.
Fortunately the piece splits into two for transportation but is nevertheless very heavy.
A fine opportunity for the home or commercial space.
