Great CC41 Post War British Oak Glazed Bookcase Cabinet
In super order with soft aging and such good looking utilitarian design. The cabinet is stamped with the two cheeses logo at the top of the rear and it’s a lesser seen piece of CC41 British furniture than most, in preferred oak.
At little about CC41 - The Committee produced approved designs which were published in the Utility Furniture Catalogue of 1943. The aim was to ensure the production of strong, well-designed furniture which made efficient use of timber. The Arts and Crafts movement influenced the designs, which were considered to be simplistic due to their lack of decoration (which was contrary to popular taste of the immediate pre-war period). Furniture based on these designs was constructed by about 700 firms around the country. The Committee was reformed as the Utility Design Panel in 1943 with Gordon Russell as Chairman.
The cabinet with its two long glazed sliding front doors and two door lower cupboard is a rather nice piece of furniture – the handles are a classic – a delightful shape. The shelves inside the glazed section are oak finished to the front with subtle detail and the finish is practical but stylish.
Condition wise this one survives in great order – sensible use – no breaks or cracks to the glass and a good tone to the oak. All you would expect...
A fabulous chance to own a piece of post war British furniture.
