A late 18th, early 19th century dome top trunk with black fabric covering and within bearing the label "Thomas Cox, Trunk Manufacturer, Park Street, Cirencester, Portmanteaus, Travelling Bags, Bonnet Boxes”.
A wonderfully shaped and sized trunk in a wonderfully original condition with the benefit of a rather fetching pair of brass carry handles (usually sadly missing). Thomas Cox was an established trunk manufacturer in Cirencester with mentions in Salters Directory of Gloucestershire. So if you needed a trunk or luggage this chap was certainly the man you would visit.
The trunk is in an as found condition and still possesses its black fabric covering which is beautifully crazed, attached to the carcass with tiny studs and apart from a few loose pieces is in very good order. The interior is in a very good condition and labelled with the maker’s details. Overall the construction in pine is strong with no wobbles, breaks or repairs. There is evidence of their having been a little historic worm which we have treated just as a precautionary measure. Only the interior lock is missing.
It’s so very pleasing to find a trunk in such fine order which has been saved from the paint brush or even worse stripped back to its bare carcass…A great piece ready to be enjoyed and used with the ability to look perfectly content anywhere in the house.
Dimensions – Overall: Height 37cm x Width 56.5cm x Depth 34cm
