Rare 1930s Country House Wicker Dog Kennel
A seldom seen piece – a large country house wicker dog kennel having been the property of celebrated deerhound breeder Miss Norah Hartley of Fletton Tower, Cambridgeshire. She was the younger sibling of the British novelist LP Hartley. She found great pride in being the first female board member of the Kennel Club, and having her deerhound, Betsinda, win gold for the hound group at Crufts.
It’s a wonderful piece – full of character – the enamel “LIVE DOG WITH CARE” sign still in situ as are a few travel labels, bearing her name and address – we assume the kennel would have housed/carried Miss Hartley's famous deerhounds to shows etc. She is known to have had up to eight living at and having the run of Fletton Tower.
It sits in very original untouched condition and of large proportions – remember this lady bred deerhounds - the ironwork is nicely dulled, the wicker is speckled with historic worm – not a concern but treated as a precaution. The two thick rope handles are attached well and the basket sits on its set of 6 original wheels. It stands a little at a slant, but hey that all adds to the charm...
A super piece with province – lots of uses – logs, kids toys or just a purely decorative piece.
Dimensions - Overall: Height 98cm x Width 68cm x Depth 108cm
