Fabulous Michael Gilbery Full Semi Nude Male Oil On Canvas C1940
A rather beautiful and wonderfully executed oil on canvas from the Studio of Michael Gilbery marked Goldberg on the rear, Goldberg being Gilbery’s former name before he changed it by deed poll. He was born in London and had his first painting, a portrait of his father, accepted by the Royal Academy at the age of 17.
This one oozes real quality. Gilbery was a highly talented artist with a natural ability for portraiture, his talents being noted by Percy Horton (one of his tutors at the Royal College of Art) “Mr Goldberg is an able draughtsman and a powerful and solid painter and that perhaps Mr Goldberg’s chief ability however lies in the direction of portraiture where he has shown real accomplishment - a facility for obtaining a likeness combined with a lively and sympathetic handling”. It survives in a rather good condition with a little fraying around the edges, a teeny bit of paint loss, otherwise expect a true vintage oil on canvas.
A wonderful oil from a very accomplished British artist.
