A Gillows Victorian Aesthetic Movement Ebonised Settee Sofa C1882
A good looking and rather fetching Aesthetic Movement ebonised sofa stamped Gillow 13405 - dating it to 1882. The aesthetic movement was seen as the bridge to the arts and crafts style.
The sofa has a pleasing flow and sweep with decorative detailed arms, an attractive lower galleried back and ebonised turned legs. The superior quality woven fabric richly patterned with flowers, fruit and leaves is very recent with matched buttoning to the arms and has been professionally upholstered.
Workshop report – The frame is firm with no wobbles and weighty for its size. The front right leg shows historic worm which was treated at reupholstery stage and we have treated again purely as a precaution. The beautiful heavy fabric is hardly worn, no holes, rips, tears or odours. The seat is firm and tight with no sagging on the arms.
