A good sized and well executed oil on canvas, distinctly signed and dated 1925. Purchased with a small number of oils this one is a little different. The well-formed and composed nude with dark curly hair stands on a partially rugged shoreline facing out to sea with the rear of her body in full view.
We chose the painting because of its strong strokes and great combination of colours. The sky is a swirl of brush strokes displaying a skilled and enthusiastic hand. The nude is cleanly painted and we love her dark hair which stands out against the fabulous blue of the sky. The rocks and shoreline are again finished with firm strokes and overall the colours are vibrant and fresh.
This one makes a change from the sometimes melancholy subjects, gloomy 19th century portraits and animal studies - it’s energetic, vibrant, strong and full of life.
The painting is dated 1925 and signed however we are unable to verify the artist at this stage. The canvas has been fitted into an older frame and may benefit from a new frame – maybe white in colour or the painting may look good hung out of frame.
This is an impressive oil which would look great in most settings particularly next to the coastline…
