1930’s Cotswold School Style Oak and Crafts Desk by Peter Waals
A wonderful desk by Peter Waals in the Cotswold tradition and built by handicraft students under the guidance of Edward Barnsley.
Peter Waals was considered a prime mover in the development and promotion of the Cotswold Tradition of furniture design and making, and in 1935 became a consultant in design for the handicraft course in Loughborough College’s Teacher Training Department. Waals died suddenly in May 1937. His widow and Leo Waals, his son, battled to keep the workshop going. They moved to new premises, Cotswold Works, until a fire destroyed the building, design, work in progress and the tool boxes of the cabinet-makers in 1938.
Without doubt a fine-looking simply designed desk – unstuffy and classy. The chamfered slender legs are beautifully and subtley joined to the sides with a gentle curve – seamless. The rear of the desk displays open joints and the drawers are finished with hexagon shaped oak knobs.
Workshop report – The desk is firm and solid with a good tone to the solid oak construction. One of the handles does have a nibble taken out but this is historic and not an eye sore. The 3 plank top sits strong and we have lightly bees waxed the piece. The knee hole area does have scuffs and a little rounding to the edges but again not a game changer. No wobbles or bad odours.
A super little British Oak Desk.
Dimensions – Overall: Height 76cm x Width 117.5cm x Depth 58cm
Dimensions – Specifically the Kneehole: Height 61.5cm x Width 45.5cm
