Betty Joel Token Works Art Deco Coffee Table Dated 1938
A late piece of Betty Joel furniture made at the Token Works in Kingston in August 1938. The table has the signatures of the designer and maker/craftsman and the date under the top.
Betty Joel was a British furniture, textile and interior designer, active in England from c. 1921 until 1938. Her work was featured in The Studio, the illustrated fine arts and decorative arts magazine from 1927 to 1938.
Betty Joel’s designs were more sophisticated than some of the Art Deco era – this one is subtle rather than in your face with gentle lines, great craftsmanship and a refined form. The occasional / coffee table is large with the top sitting on four classic deco shaped legs.
Condition wise it’s in good order- we have wear and tear to the frame, sides and top, no repairs but soft marks to the top. Nothing distasteful or annoying to look at. It’s sitting firm with no repairs or wobbles.
Without doubt a super and useful piece of Betty Joel...
